New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
