Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
